Just Engaged? Here’s What To Do First (Before You Book Anything)

Firstly – congratulations 🤍
If you’ve just said yes, you’re probably floating somewhere between pure excitement and “oh my gosh, where do we even start?”

As a wedding planner (and someone who has guided hundreds of couples through this exact season), I can tell you this: the first 4-6 weeks after getting engaged set the tone for your entire planning journey. Let’s make sure yours starts calm, confident and completely aligned with the kind of wedding you actually want.

Step 1: Pause Before You Plan

It’s tempting to jump straight into venues, dresses and Pinterest boards.

But before you do anything practical, take a moment with your partner and ask:

  • What did we love most about the proposal?

  • How do we want our wedding to feel?

  • Big celebration or intimate gathering?

  • City, coastal, winery, backyard?

Not “What’s trending?”
Not “What does everyone else expect?”

Just the two of you.

The strongest weddings aren’t the most expensive — they’re the most intentional.

Step 2: Set Your Non-Negotiables

Before you start emailing venues, get clarity on three things:

  1. Guest Count Range (even a rough one)

  2. Budget Comfort Zone

  3. Time of Year Preference

Without these, you’re planning blind.

If you’re getting married in or around Melbourne, for example, peak seasons (October–April) book out quickly - especially for venues in the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and inner-city. Having clarity early gives you leverage.

Step 3: Resist the Comparison Trap

Instagram and Pinterest are beautiful — but they’re also curated highlight reels.

Your wedding does not need:

  • A $15,000 couture gown

  • $40,000 in florals cascading from every surface

  • A meticulously choreographed first dance designed to go viral

  • Every detail custom monogrammed from napkin to menu

What it does need is: thoughtful moments, exquisite details that reflect your style, and an experience that feels effortlessly refined, one you and your guests will remember for a lifetime because of how it made you feel.

It needs meaning.

The best weddings I’ve planned weren’t defined by trends, they were defined by connection.

Step 4: Decide If You Want Support (Earlier Is Better)

Here’s something many couples don’t realise:

The best planners don’t just “run the day.”
We protect your budget, prevent costly mistakes, manage suppliers, and create cohesion from the start.

Hiring a planner early often:

  • Saves money in the long run

  • Gives you access to trusted vendor networks

  • Reduces decision fatigue

  • Keeps family dynamics smooth

  • Allows you to actually enjoy your engagement

If you’re feeling even slightly overwhelmed already, that’s your sign that support would feel good and it’s not indulgent.

Step 5: Book Your Venue Before Anything Else

Your venue dictates:

  • Date

  • Guest capacity

  • Catering style

  • Styling direction

  • Budget allocation

Once that’s secured, everything flows more easily.

But here’s a tip most blogs won’t tell you:

Before you sign, have someone experienced review the contract. Hidden minimum spends, bump-in times, wet weather plans and supplier restrictions can dramatically impact your budget and stress levels later. I can help with this.

The Biggest Mistake Newly Engaged couples Make

Planning in isolation.

Wedding planning is emotional. It’s layered with family expectations, money conversations, and a million micro-decisions. Having someone neutral in your corner changes everything.

You deserve to feel:

  • Supported

  • In control

  • Clear on your priorities

  • Excited (not anxious)
